Hospitalized Children and Young Adults with Serious Illness
How Does the Program Work?
The foundation of the Dances With Wood program is the building of woodworking projects that can be undertaken while a child is sitting or lying in a hospital bed.
Each project kit comes with a workbook (40-50 pages) that provides detailed instructions to guide the child through the steps for building the wooden project. Special exercises in the workbook also promote independent learning skills, writing, reading, math, art, and storytelling.
The kits are comprised of prefabricated sanded wooden pieces ready for assembly. No sharp tools or cutting are required. Every child is also provided with a set of tools and paints. Upon completion of a project, the child receives a Certificate of Creative Achievement as a lasting and affirming symbol of his or her success. Dances With Wood program serves children and young adults between the ages of 6-18. Adult supervision is recommended.
